Pedestrian safety project underway in the city center / City Briefs

In recent years, residents of the Aljoya retirement community have informed the city that they want to have a safe mid-block walkway for easier access from their apartment building at 2430 76th Avenue SE to businesses and services in the town center nearby.

The new pedestrian safety project – which includes the installation of a rectangular fast flashing beacon signal, center median, ADA-compliant curb ramp, and sidewalk markings and crosswalk – is now underway on 76th Avenue Southeast between 24th and 27th Streets Southeast. Work on the project — part of the city’s Transportation Improvement Project (TIP) — is expected to last through the end of June, according to the city’s website.

City Manager Jessi Bon said in her report to the June 7 council meeting that she had received emails from concerned residents about the removal of three trees during construction.

She said the design team evaluated all possible locations and configurations, and the project required the removal of trees to install the elements and provide sufficient visibility for signage and pedestrians. The project team will identify suitable replacements for the felled trees.

One of the trees was already on the removal list because it lifted sidewalk signs and narrowed a water main, creating maintenance and safety issues.

INSTALLED GUARDRAILS

In response to multiple vehicles running off the road in the 9300 block of Mercerwood Drive over the past few years, the city’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP) and engineering teams have installed a guardrail at this location . The project is part of the small capital city traffic operation project.

MERCERDALE PLAYGROUND UPDATE

Beginning the week of June 13, the Mercerdale Park playground project remained on the holding pattern as Northwest Playground crews waited out several days of dry weather needed to install the rubber top layer and surface. budding game. Crews switched to a different binder to install the rubberized coating in light drizzle weather. The project will feature a railway track design in the revetment. The playground equipment was installed in January.
