Carlos Leal takes the title in a crazy 4-way tournament

A new LFA welterweight champion was crowned as the promotion held a four-way, one-night tournament on Friday – but the road to get there was twisty, long and unusual.

Ultimately, Carlos Leal (14-3) won the LFA 112 title in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, beating Junior Marques (11-6) by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) . While Leal’s route to the top was typical, the opposite side of the support was the thing farthest from normal.

The tournament began with two three-minute, three-round quarter-final bouts. The first clash was a two-way brawl, in which Gabriel Bonfim (11-0) finished Brenner Alberth (8-1) via punches at 0:38 of round 3. On the other side of the rack, Leal only needed 69 seconds. to finish Diego Dias (13-4) with a violent punch.

Bonfim vs Real were lined up for the tournament final – until they didn’t. Due to concussion-like symptoms, Bonfim was taken out of the match and the promotion turned to two substitutes, Quemuel Ottoni and Wendell Giacomo, who won in the undisclosed prelims.

However, neither Ottoni nor Giacomo received medical clearance. In an unusual turn of events, Marques, who lost to Ottani, was named a No.3 substitute and was placed in the final against Leal.

As he lasted all three rounds, Marques ultimately lost his second fight of the night when he was swept by Leal on the three judges’ scorecards.

In the main co-event, Otto Rodrigues ended Carlos Augusto da Silva’s 17-game winning streak via a unanimous decision that won six rounds 10-8 on the three-judge scorecards. Before the fight, Rodrigues had not competed since April 2017.

Perhaps the most violent finish came when Kayan Krushewsky brutally knocked out Junior Luiz with a pair of punishing punches. The stop came 62 seconds after the start of the fight.

Also on the main card, flyweight star Carlos Mota (6-0) made his long-awaited return to the cage when he won a fairly one-sided unanimous decision over Jefferson Oliveira (5-1).
