Carla Esparza reacts to Rose Namajunas vs. Zhang Weili: “I’m next”
Carla Esparza holds her head metaphorically high following the news that Rose Namajunas vs. Zhang Weili 2 will be the next Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) women’s strawweight title fight.
The Namajunas v Zhang rematch will serve as the main co-event for UFC 268, led by Kamaru Usman against Colby Covington 2 and takes place inside Madison Square Garden in New York, New York on Saturday, November 6 via ESPN + à la carte (PPV).
“I worked many years to make my way to the title,” Esparza captioned a photo of herself on Instagram Tuesday, referring to the upcoming title fight. “I have faith that good things will come, and in the meantime I will use this time to strengthen my strengths and develop my skills!” May the best woman win… I’m next.
Esparza (No.3), the first UFC strawweight champion, strengthened with five straight wins over Yan Xiaonan, Marina Rodriguez, Michelle Waterson, Alexa Grasso and Virna Jandiroba. Esparza was in the running to challenge Namajunas, a story-rich match that would serve as a follow-up to The Ultimate Fighter 20 final, where Esparza beat Namajunas to win the crown.
Zhang (21-2) receives an immediate rematch for the title although he only secured one title defense before being knocked out (watch highlights) by Namajunas (10-4) at 1:18 from the first round at UFC 261 in April.
