After his fight, Peres complained of headaches just hours after his fight. Concerned family members decided to take him to the hospital in Campo Mourao, Brazil.

As the amateur fighter’s condition deteriorated, he was transferred to another hospital. After being pronounced dead on Saturday, local medical authorities decided to further investigate the loss of life.

As of this writing, the combat sports entity that hosted the fight has yet to comment on the tragic death of Lucas Gabriel Peres. Since combat sports have been around, there haven’t been many deaths directly caused by trauma suffered inside the MMA cage.

In an effort to draw attention to this frightening issue, World Rugby medical adviser Dr Barry O’Driscoll shared his thoughts on head trauma suffered in contact sports. In addition, he also expressed the wish that the necessary changes take effect for the safety of athletes around the world.

“We have all been familiar with the worries of head injuries and the concerns of minor head injuries and minor concussions in recent years. Said Dr Barry O’Driscoll.

“And yet here we see people rendered incapacitated after being hit on the head. What kind of world do we live in? O’Driscoll said.

With the recent loss of Peres due to head trauma, certainly, more attention will be paid to the safety of the fighter after a respective fight. The MMA Rules Committee will assess the safety of the oblique kick and possibly address the issue of head trauma as well. Unfortunately, these tragedies also occur in boxing and fans often forget after the time. However, head trauma and safety remain among the most difficult issues to prepare for in MMA today.
