A woman beaten to death with a pipe in the city center

PHILADELPHIA — A woman was beaten to death with a pipe in a downtown apartment building on Wednesday, according to Philadelphia police.

Police say Samantha Maag, 31, of Blenheim, New Jersey, was found lying on the floor of the eighth floor of an office building in the 300 block of Chestnut Street around 2:14 p.m. Wednesday.

Officers were called to the building for an ongoing robbery report and were told that upon arrival a man had attacked a woman.

Police found Maag on the ground, along with Jeffery Stepien, 49, who was holding two pipes.

Stepien was taken into custody and identified by witnesses as the person who attacked Maag, police said.

Maag was taken to Jefferson Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 3:16 p.m.

According to Action News, Maag was hit at least five times in the head from behind.

Fox 29 reports that Stepien and Maag’s victim knew each other and had arguments in the past.

Stepien was charged with murder and possession of an instrument of crime.
